Your skillful driving abilities plus your sense of responsibility combine to make you less of a liability for insurance companies. Plus, many veterans are above the age of 55, which comes with some perks when shopping for car insurance.

Discover a just few of the reasons that military veterans have lots of car insurance discounts to choose from.

Reason #1

A Way to Say “Thank You” and Give Credit for Your Professional Experience

Many companies offer discounts for veterans as a way to thank you for your service. Auto insurance companies with great perks for veterans and active duty service members hope that you’ll see value in their discounts and choose to become a long-time, loyal customer. When they offer discounts and other benefits for you and your family, it’s a way of building a relationship with you.
Secondly, when you’re veteran or active duty service member, you aren’t the average driver. There’s a high probability that you possess advanced skills because of your training and experience. Insurance companies know that safer drivers are worth investing in, especially if they’re armed forces veterans.
Reason #2

Desirable Age and Driving Habits

Most veterans are 55 years of age or older. As of September 2020, the largest population of vets fell in the 55-79 age range. Statistically speaking, senior drivers typically drive less frequently and often practice safe driving behaviors more than other demographics. With this in mind, auto insurance companies love to have your business and use discounts to get your attention.

Other Ways Military Veterans Save on Car Insurance

While you can find some great discounts that are reserved for veterans and active duty military members, there are other ways to save on your auto insurance, too. Many auto insurance companies offer savings based on your driving habits, type of vehicle you drive, how many cars or drivers are on your policy, your age, and much more. You can even get discounts by downloading smartphone apps and tracking your safe driving performance. Here’s a look at some of the best and easiest ways that veterans, active duty members of the military, and others can get the most out of their auto insurance while spending less.

Good Driver, Accident- and Violation-Free Discounts

According to American Family Insurance, one of the easiest ways to get a discount on your car insurance is simply by having a good driving record. If you’re accident-free with no moving violations or claims within the last five years or so, there’s a great chance that your auto insurance company can help you out. Allstate advertises a 40% discount for safe drivers, while Geico offers savings of up to 22%. Many insurance companies offer smartphone apps to track your driving and provide discounts based on good, safe driving performance. Check out Allstate’s DriveSense app or Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack app for more information.

Multi-Vehicle Discount

If you or your family have more than one car, typically it’s cheaper to put them all on the same policy rather than separate policies. As part of the customer loyalty program, Geico offers customers with a multi-vehicle policy up to 25% in savings on their annual premiums. Similarly, State Farm offers savings up to 20% for customers who are related and living in the same household with two or more vehicles. Progressive allows you to add multiple cars to your policy if they are kept at the same address. This coverage includes cars owned by spouses, family members, and roommates and saves customers an average of 4% on their premiums.

Bundling/Multi-Policy Discounts

Insurance companies typically offer bundling options that help you save money as soon as you begin coverage. Simply put, a bundle is when you have two or more policies through the same insurer. This can include your auto insurance plus a policy for your home, rental space, boat, motorcycle, and more. Not all bundles give you the same types of discounts, and not all insurers offer the same bundle options in every state. For customers in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Arbella offers discounts up to 20% for bundling car and home insurance. USAA customers get up to 10% off their premium by bundling renters or homeowners insurance with auto insurance.

Driving Class Discounts

Many insurers give you the opportunity to complete a safe driving class—oftentimes held online–in exchange for a discount. For older drivers, AARP offers a skills refresher course that may qualify you for a discount either through AARP’s third party provider, The Hartford, or another insurer. If you’re adding a young driver to your policy, State Farm’s discounts for drivers under 25 include its Steer Clear Discount. Customers complete a training course and five hours of driving practice, then engage in a documented mentorship with an older friend or family member to save as much as 20% on their premium.

E-Pay and Pay-in-Full Discounts

If you can pay your annual premium in one payment, many insurers offer a break on your premium. Additionally, you can get discounts by setting up electronic payments or by making several on-time payments. Travelers Insurance offers a 7.5% discount for those who pay in full, 2%-3% off for those who enroll in electronic funds transfer payments, and up to 15% savings for those making consistent on-time payments online. Say Insurance offers a 10% pay-in-full discount for drivers in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. Similarly, Progressive offers a discount for drivers who pay six months up front (except those in California).

Good Student or Non-Resident Student Discounts

If you’re back in school to finish up your degree or have a dependent child in school, you might be able to wrangle about a 10% discount. Many insurance companies offer a good student discount for drivers with solid academic performance. Secondly, parents can save on premiums when their student drivers are away at school and don’t have a car on campus. Progressive offers both good student and distant student discounts. For students who are 16-25 years old with a 3.0 or higher GPA or rank in the top 20% of their class, State Farm offers 25% in discounts.

Safety Devices Discounts

Did you know that safety features lead to savings? Geico, for example, offers savings for drivers with autos that have air bags, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft systems, or daytime running lights. Since many of these options come standard in vehicles today, you might be surprised that you could save up to 23% with Geico on the medical payments or personal injury section of your car insurance. The same goes for Liberty Mutual. Depending on where you live, Liberty offers discounts for safety features such as electronic stability control, adaptive headlights, and anti-theft technologies.

Occupational and Professional Affiliation Discounts

You may be eligible for an auto insurance discount simply because of your current occupation, affiliation with an alumni association, or membership in a professional organization. Professionals who work as architects, certified public accountants, librarians, pilots, police officers, elementary and high school teachers, and more are eligible for auto insurance discounts. For example, check out Liberty Mutual’s discount for teachers. Educational and professional organizations are another way to find insurance savings. Geico provides a list of professional organizations, fraternities, and sororities whose members may qualify for a discount. If you belong to any membership organizations, check their websites for auto insurance discounts.

New Vehicle Discounts

If you are the proud owner of a vehicle that’s less than three years old, you might be able to save on your insurance automatically. Newer vehicles are more likely to have updated safety features that reduce the number of highway crash fatalities. With this in mind, insurers want to encourage drivers to have newer, safer vehicles when possible and provide a 10%-15% savings on auto insurance for new vehicle owners. Travelers Insurance offers savings of up to 10% if you have a newer vehicle. Geico offers up to 15% savings for customers with a new vehicle.

Louisiana Resident Military Discount

If you are an active duty military member living in Louisiana, you may be eligible for a discount on your auto insurance. The Louisiana Department of Insurance requires auto insurers to offer a 25% discount to these individuals provided they meet certain criteria. To receive the discount, you must be a Louisiana resident and full-time active duty service member. If you’re stationed outside of the state, you must be single or have a family that resides in Louisiana. The discount on auto insurance applies to your spouse and any dependent children on your policy.
